Sorry, I probably should have included this in the first message.

I'm one of the 4 people left on the planet who still uses dial up, on my
laptop no less...and when I want to shut the lid for any reason and I'm
online it automatically disconnects me. Does anyone know of a way I can stop
this happening? It's a little annoying, when I'm trying to download
something at night to have the leave it all open so I don't get
disconnected.

There is a setting to control what happens when the lid is closed. You can
set your system to "do nothing" when you close the lid.

Go to Power Options in the Classic View of Control Panel and click on "Chose
what closing the lid does."

Consider your Sleep and Hibernate options, too. I do not know if merely
downloading a large file is enough activity to prevent your notebook from
going to sleep or hibernating.

I myself would not keep a notebook's lid closed while it is operating. The
keyboard "breathes" a little to help dissipate heat. Do you really need to
close it up tight?

I didn't know this. Thankyou for that. I've had my laptop for a few months,
this is the first I've owned so it's all still quite new to me.
