disc drive icon missing, drive not working

Not only will my disc drive door not open, but I cannot
even get Windows 2000 to register the drive. The icon for
the drive (R:\) is completely gone as if the drive does
not exsit.

Is there a way to download the drivers from somewhere
without having to open the door?

Any other insight?

Disk drive door? Disk drives don't usually have doors.
Please specify exactly what sort of drive you're referring to.
CD? DVD? Zip? Removable hard disk? Other?
 
CD-ROM drive not opening, not flickering on startup and
not showing up as an icon in Windows 2000
