disc clean up sticks

when cleaning up temp files and other un-wanted stuff
using the disc clean up, the computer freezes. I am
still able to cancel it but it only does a small chunk of
the operation.

I think it might be to do with 'compressing old files' as
I have two old downloaded files that I cannot delete.
Everytime I click on them the file is not there although
the icon is.

Help????
