disappearing tray icons, also posted to win xp help and support NG

Hello,
I have a new clean installation of xp sp1 on my computer. I just
installed on a new hard drive. Anyway, after several days of use, I have
tray icons that don't appear even though the app is still running.
Everything else seems fine and the system works well. I've checked for
spyware and viruses. I even reinstalled xp yesterday. This fixed the problem
for a afew hours. the icons seem to disappear after rebooting from
downloading critical updates. Is it possible that one of these are the
problem? Thanks ofor any help that anyone can provide.
