disappearing network connections

I am using a VPN client that creates a virtual network adapter or NIC
in the XP folder for "Network Connections". This virtual adapter, I
have shared using the ICS wizard. But now for some reason the adapter
has disappeared from the Network Connections folder and the sharing no
longer works. Reinstalling the VPN software doesn't work. I can see
the adapter in the registry but it won't appear. How can I get back my
icon so I can enable ICS for it?
Is there an alternative way to share a (virtual) NIC? How about netsp?
Thanks

Mark,

third party VPN clients are notorious for breaking things,
particularly when you have Service Pack 2 installed.

First thing to do is uninstall the VPN client, retest and repair
Windows as well as possible, then make sure you get a very new
version of the VPN client software.

Thanks, this is what I tried already. At least I tried repairing XP
but without success. I really don't want to have to format the disk
and do a clean reinstall. Anyone know how to repair the Network
Connections? Everytime I reinstall they seem to increase the numbers.
Now there are called "Local Area Connection 5" and "Local Area
Connection 6". I tried netsh but without success.

Mark,

what I would do now is this:

1. Uninstall the third party VPN software and leave it
uninstalled until all other problems are solved.

2. Fill in the form at http://www.michna.com/kb/wxnet.htm and
follow the resulting advice.
