Disappearing icons at startup

When I shut down and then start back up, about half the
time, everything looks normal, and then suddenly the hour
glass comes back on, and all icons disappear on the
desktop and the computer freezes. Any suggestions as to
what is wrong?
 
My 87 year old mother is having the same problem. Would
like to help her....did you get the problem fixed? Her
icons disappear when she signs on. This is the second
time it has happened. Any help as to what she is doing
wrong and how she can fix the current problem? She has
Windows XP.
