disappearing hard drive space

jackd

I currently use two hard drives: one 30 gig drive for all
documents, pictures, etc. and one 8 gig drive that runs
all of my programs.

My problem is that Windows claims that I am running out
disk space; however, I don't have very many programs on
the computer -- if I add up all the program folders, the
total is only about 4 gigs.

I have run defrag and all the other cleanup options of
which I know. I have searched for hidden files, etc. The
disk is not partitioned, at least not that I could find.
Is there somewhere else I should look?

thanks,

jackd

Your space may be taken up by restore points. If you don't mind losing all
restore points then disable system restore, reboot and then enable it again
& check your disk space. You can also use disk cleanup to clear temp files
and temporary internet files, in the options you can delete all but the most
recent restore points.
If this doesn't clear it you may need to manually check the temporary folder
& temporary internet folder. Also you may need to look for particularly
large files.

Hope this helps

Have you checked system restore? How much space do you have allocated? You
can view, adjust or turn off system restore here:

1) Right click on the My Computer icon
2) Choose properties
3) Click on the System Restore tab
4) Click on the affected drive letter
5) Click the Settings button.

have Folder Options - View set to show Hidden files, and *not* Hide
Protected mode ones and try again. The hidden protected files could
easily add up to a couple of GB. If this shows the disk filling then
some things to do:

Go to Control Panel - System - Advanced - Performance Settings -
Advanced - Virtual Memory and click Settings. Highlight the other
drive and put a system managed page file on it; click Set, then
highlight C and put a custom one there, initial size only 2, Max 50,
click Set (the one on C will probably never come into existence,, but
the system tends to sulk if it is not allowed).

Decide if you want to Hibernate - if not, Control Panel - Power Options
and in Hibernate uncheck the enable; that will save a file the size of
RAM

In System - System restore highlight the drive and take settings; reduce
the space allowed, which is probably 1000 MB, to say 400

In Control Panel - Internet Options; central Temporary Internet files
area you can click Settings and move the folder to the other drive.

And you may have more than you think in My Documents - open a window on
C:\Documents and Settings\you\
to show it; open a window on your other disk, and *right* drag it over,
taking *Move* here
