disappearing disk space

Andrew J.P.

i seem to have a problem with my hard drive space
inexplicably disappearing. i have an 80 gig drive with a
3.5 gig partition solely for windows. when i open the c
drive in windows explorer and highlight all the files
within it (hidden files included) the total space used
reads as about 1.7 gigs. however, if i simply click on
the c drive without opening it, windows explorer tells me
that 3.1 gigs of space has been used. my question is:
how do i account for this missing file space when i have
already searched the drive, desktop, shared docs folder,
etc. with hidden files revealed. i have already run disk
cleanup several times and cleared all my temp folders
without any result. can anyone offer some advice?

Are you also viewing hidden operating system files
because this is a different thing altogether. in the
same place where u enabled the showing of hidden files
scroll down and uncheck hide protected operating system
files

--But heck what do I know I'm just 15--

Some of that can be accounted for by file slack, especially if the drive is FAT instead of NTFS. Also, make sure that you have unchecked "Hide protected operating system files" in Folder Options, in addition to "Show hidden files and folders".
