disappearing emails

I would appreciate any advice anyone has to offer. On a
senior partners laptop he is using Outlook 2003 (Windows
98 OS). He has loads of emails in his inbox (was in the
vicinity of 4000, he has now reduced this to 1800). He
keeps all his old emails for reference. WHen he picks up
emails, the computer shows that it is receiving eg 4 new
emails, but they don't actually turn up in his inbox. I
have checked for any message rules, and there aren't any.
The inbox shows that there are 241 new messages, but when
you scroll through the inbox, you can only see 59! Oddly
enough, when a colleague sent an email that didn't turn
up, he did a search using the outlook "find" and the
missing email was then "found" supposedly in the inbox,
even though it wasn't there looking through the inbox.
All very odd... any thoughts. I have suggested he try to
clean out his inbox, but since there is loads of space on
his har drive, and it was still working fine a month ago
when he had 4000+ emails in the inbox, I'm not sure that
will help. WOuld appreciate any suggestions

Bruce,

Try having the client check View -->Arrange By --> Current
View -->Customize Current view. Make sure there are no
filters applied as well.
