Disappearing E-Mail

I'm re-posting this in the hopes someone can help me.

I am using Outlook 2003 Service Pack 3. Often times, but not predictably,
when I double click on an e-mail message in my In Box, the message header
opens but the text and/or pictures are missing (i.e., the rest of the screen
is blank).

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks very much. Starting in safe mode took care of the problem. Quick
follow-up: Do I have to use the "Run" function every time (and entering
outlook.exe /safe) or is there a way to create a shortcut to do this?

Got it. Thanks again for the help. The problem appears to have been solved.

Oops. Sorry. The problem add-in is my virus checker (AVG). If I disable this,
how can I check incoming e-mails for viruses?

At the risk of trying your patience - yet again - are you saying that this AV
engine is built into Windows XP or into Outlook? I don't understand where it
resides if it's someplace other than in my antivirus software.

It runs as a service under Windows.....

Aha. And finally a light goes on in my brain. Thanks very much for both the
information and your patience. I appreciate your taking the time with me.

My sincere apologies, VanguardLH. Upon rereading, I see that the post about a
built-in Windows virus scanner for e-mails was *not* sent by you. In the
interim, I did some checking, since I admit to being skeptical, and I found
that indeed Windows does not and has never included an independent e-mail
virus scanner.

I do appreciate your letting me know and, again, I apologize for not having
paid closer attention to the posting source.
