Disappearing desktop icons

When I open or maximise any windowed app, all my desktop icons disappear until I click on the hide/show desktop button on the quick launch bar. When I do this, all my icons appear and any open windows minimize. As soon as I re-maximise any window, all my desktop icons disappear again. It's not the 'Show desktop icons' sesction from the desktop context menu as this is always ticked. Any ideas anyone
