disappearing cursor

Anyone have any ideas as to why the cursor in Word 2000 might suddenly
disappear? My sister says she no longer can see the black vertical bar that
marks the cursor position when she is typing. We are not in the same city,
so I am trying to help her over the phone. I had her change the view she
was using, but that didn't seem to be the answer.

It may just have shrunk. Tell her to switch to 500% Zoom and back and see if
that cures it. No one knows what causes this phenomenon, but apparently that
trick usually fixes it (at least temporarily).

In Windows Control Panel -> Mouse there's a setting for "hide cursor
while typing".

I'm using Windows XP-Pro and I do not see the "hide cursor while typing"
option that you describe below.

It's "Hide pointer while typing" and applies only to the mouse pointer, not
the text cursor, so it's irrelevant here.

Yes, I had located "hide pointer while typing," but didn't see how that
could possibly help with the cursor. <grin>
