Can anyone tell me why, after installing SP2 successfully, I am getting a
message in the DOS screen before XP starts which says:
Invalid boot.ini file
Booting from c:/windows
I have looked for a boot.ini file but there isn't one.
Any ideas?

There should be a boot.ini file located in the C:\ root folder.

Open My Computer and choose Tools from the Menu then Folder Options to change your views.

Choose the View tab and check the boxes for "Show Hidden files and folders" and Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files"

Go to the C:\ in Explorer and check for the existance of the Boot.ini file

If there is one there, you can double click it and check out what is in there.

If there is not one, you should put one there to get rid of the error.

Copy the following into a new Notepad document.

Start->Run-> Type "Notepad" without the quotes.

Copy and paste the following:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

File->save as-> Chose Save as Type "All FIles" and name the file BOOT.INI in the C:\ folder.

The boot.ini file is normally Read Only, Hidden and a System File.
