Right click your taskbar and click to remove check next to Lock the
Taskbar. A divider will appear at the end of the Quick Launch toolbar.
Place your mouse pointer over it. When you see the double arrow <-->
appear, click and hold to "grab" that divider. Still holding, move the bar
to uncover the Quick Launch icons.

When you have it resized to your liking, pull the divider just a little bit
wider. About enough space to fit half of an icon. Then re-lock your
taskbar.

If no luck, check that you are actually logged on to the account that you
think you're logged on to. Click Start> Run and type in %userprofile%
Windows Explorer will open with the focus on the folders for the account
that is currently logged on. Does that highlighted folder match the same
group of folders that you were checking before?

I don't know if this will help but a few days ago my whole XP screen changed
as well...and ended up looking similar to Windows 98 but not
quite...everything was kind of grey and plain with the fonts being all
different. The screen was still set for XP view (not Windows 98 classic
view).
Just before that I had updated Java on my computer and after the update
things were not looking good. Fortunately I was able to do a system restore
to the pre-Java update and things were back to normal. Possibly there is a
system restore point set that may bring you back to where you were.

I followed your suggestion but nothing happened.
Click Start> Run and type in %userprofile%
That opened up my profile but did not highlight anything though.

I also tried system restore to the point of two weeks ago. Icons were not
recovered in Quick Launch.
I can manually re-create those icons except for the icon of "Show desktop".
Please advise me where to make a shortcut for "Show Desktop".
TIA . Craig

Thanks.
From Google search, I found a zip file which can recover Show Desktop. It
worked perfectly.
Thanks again. Craig

You're welcome. Another way to get a copy of that file (without recreating
from scratch): Grab a copy from another user's account folders.

Hi Sharon,

Could you please be more specific about this?

Are you referring to creating a "shortcut to Show Desktop"?. Please
tell me how to grab a copy.

Hi Sharon,

If there is more than one user on the system, go to this folder in their
user profile:

..\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Quick Launch

Copy the Show Desktop.scf file and drop it into your Quick Launch folder.
