Disapearing Pagefile

I have had my pagefile disappear twice for no apparent reason, with the
ultimate symptom being the computer hanging on boot up at the welcome page.
I got around this by hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del.
Ultimately I had to reload twice.
Has anyone else experienced this phenomenon?

The virtual memory file, pagefile.sys, is re-generated
each time you start Windows XP. That's normal. Look here
