John

I have 2 computers networked up with direct cable via
network cards between the 2. For some strange reason one
of my computers can only see some of the shared folders
on the other computer. I tried sharing some more folders,
and then some of the folders that one could see, you now
can't.

I have WIN XP Home edition on one computer and windows XP
Pro on the other.
Any help would be fantastic!

John,

Are the "disappearing" folders in shares on the XP Home or Pro computer?
Remember, XP Home limits you to 5 total connections, and XP Pro to 10. One
connection = one share used by one computer. If you have 5 connections in use,
and you try to add a 6th, something is gonna happen.

Also, on XP Pro, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel - Folder
Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Pro, you
need to have the SFS settings the same on each computer. With a mixed LAN, as
you have, you should use (enable) SFS.

If SFS is disabled, check the Local Security Policy (Control Panel -
Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".

If you set the Local Security Policy to "Guest only", make sure that the Guest
account is enabled, and has an identical, non-blank, password on all computers.
If "Classic", setup and use a common account with identical, non-blank, password
on all computers.

Cheers,
Chuck

We need more information, John.

Which computer has the shared folders that can't be seen -- Home or
Pro?

If it's Pro, is simple file sharing enabled or disabled?

What are the names of the folders?

The more specifics you give, the more likely it is that someone can
help.
