Just upgraded from Home to Professional XP. Mc Affee Firewall won't start.
On McAffee forum for this error situation the answer is to disable XP
Firewall.
I would rather keep McAfee's than XP Firewall since McAffee Firewall setting
up is more convivial,
Proof?
When I try to disable the XP firewall nothing works (as given in the link
how to do it) .
Routine is
1 CPanel
2 Network an Internet Connections (this choice absent on my PC)
3 Network Connections (OK I get this)
4 Right click the desired connection (I get only one connection the other
two items in the list are wizards for New Connections and Network Startup)
5 Select Properties (this is where I stop, nothing happens here)
....
6 select Advanced

How do I get rid of this XP firewall? By the way I had succeeded in
disabling it in Home version but it installed itself in Upgrade.

Thanks

You cannot open Properties when right-clicking a connection.

Ramesh, Thanks,
I used the link which recommends: ...
To resolve this issue:

1. Remove any copies of theRasapi32.dll library that are NOT located at
%SystemRoot%\System32.
2. If the problem persists, Open a CMD prompt.
3. Type net start telephony and press Enter.
4. If the problem persists, type net start rasman and press Enter.
5. If the problem persists, and the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Telephony\Cards\
Next key exists, use Regedit to Export the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Telephony\Cards\
Next key. Then delete the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Telephony\Cards\
Next key.

NOTE: If the Next sub-key exists in the default user profile, delete it.

My response:
1. the only copy was in c:\windows\system32, still no go
2. I used command prompt and the commands "telephony" and "rasman". System
reply was in both cases "The requested service has already been started",
still no go
3. I searched for the string HKEY....., nowhere to be found in regedit.
4. Where do I go from here?

Tks,

Pierre

Pierre,

Type "regsvr32 netshell" in the RUN box. If that does not solve, give me some time to research this.

Meanwhile, use a VBScript to turn off/on the firewall. Available here: http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k

Ramesh thanks,

the regsvr32 .... still does not do it.
I reviewed in the link the long article by Clifton on firewalls and note
that I do not get the Tabs he mentions; still the same problem than with the
other procedures: I do not get any further than "properties" and then no
properties windows shows up, even less "advanced".

I have also tries the VBScript but this is beyond my abilities. I get an
error msg and fear I am gettin into things way beyond where I know what I am
doing.

I would be happy to stay with XP Firewall rather than McAfee, except that
the XP Firewall seems to be hidding itself profoundly (proof all my failed
attempt to get at it), whereas McAfee is an extra very visible layer for the
user

Regards,

Pierre
