Disabling Windows Firewall Warning

G

Guest

Checking the box labeled "I have a firewall solution that I'll monitor
myself" does nothing. Next re-boot, Windows has forgotten this setting. Is
there a registry key I can change? I've got a hardware firewall (built into
my LinkSys router) and am running ZoneAlarmPro 5.1.033.000 with its firewall
enabled. Is there any way to Permanently disable the warning message?

Open your Control Panel, then double-click the Security Center icon.
In the left side, click on the link titled: "Change the way Security Center
alerts me". Next, uncheck the Firewall Alert Setting, then click OK.

I don't know what checkbox that is, but when you open the Security
Center and click on the Alert Settings under Resources, there is a
checkbox to disable alerts about the firewall. That setting is supposed
to stick and does in my experience.

That would have been the way we would love for it to work, but it doesn't.
Clearing all three check-boxes under "Change the way Security Center alerts
me" and setting the firewall settings in Security Center to "Not Monitored"
does nothing, because on the next reboot, Windows has conveniently forgotten
the "I have a firewall solution that I'll monitor myself" setting and the
"Firewall" check-box under Alerts is checked again.
Thus the question for a registry entry.. if anyone has the answer or a
work-around, that would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Good to know that someone else has noticed the problem, at least. Note to
the "MVP"s: denying that a problem exists doesn't make it go away!

You described the problem and asked if there was something to be done
differently. We told you you were checking the right boxes. That isn't
denial of the problem, it is confirmation that you actually DO have a
problem. That is the question you actually asked.

Hi

Many have reported this problem in the newsgroups, it looks like
a bug in SP2.

Workaround 1:

If the "Change the Way Security Center Notifies Me" doesn't stick
when you reboot, or you want to disable the Security Center totally,
you can do the following:

Start/Run --> services.msc

Find "Security Center" in the list, double click on it, set
"Startup type" to Disabled.

Workaround 2:

howiezows have another way to "fix" this, locking down the permissions
on the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center in
registry.

Take a look here if you still want the Security Center enabled,
and with a setting that survives a reboot:
http://groups.google.com/[email protected]

I'm a bit reluctant to point to this solution to everybody that have
this problem, because locking down permissions on system files and
system registry keys very often comes back to bite you later on in
upgrade situations (and then you have long gone forgot that you did
this change or you fail to see the connection).

Hi

Have you tried this one:

Control Panel/Security Center, click on the "Change the Way
Security Center Notifies Me" link in the left pane.

If the "Change the Way Security Center Notifies Me" doesn't
stick when you reboot:

Workaround 1:

Start/Run --> services.msc

Find "Security Center" in the list, double click on it, set
"Startup type" to Disabled.

Hi

For many that have a 3rd party firewall installed, it looks like
this setting does not stick, most likely a bug in SP2 as I see it.
