disabling pop-up control

McAfee Security informs me that I may need to temporarily
disable pop-up controls in order to install an online
update to my virus detector (my attempt to install an
update has failed repeatedly). Where/how do I go about
disabling pop-up controls in IE (Version 6).

Hi Liz -

Which pop-up control are you referring to? IE6 doesn't have any built-in
pop-up control if I recall correctly. Is it some extra pop up blocker
software you've installed? If so, which "make and model" is it?

You triggered a thought - I have a Google Search Bar
installed on my system now that appears on IE for me. It
does have a control on it that I can toggle between
blocking popups or allowing popups. But even when I set
it to allow popups, I still have the problem with
installing the McAfee update. Even if I go into the
Google options dialog and uncheck the Popup Blocker
option, still the problem persists. Any suggestions?

Hmmm. I too use Google toolbar /pop-up blocker (which doesn't always work
for every site, I've noticed) so it is odd that it could be interfering with
the McAfee Update. More so, in light of your actions of disabling its pop-up
blocking function. How long has this been going on with McAfee. Surely,
you've updated before, or have you just (recently) installed McAfee?

Another thing I've noticed is this. More often than not, if I permit Active
Scripting (which I *rarely* do) I do get pop-ups that would normally not
even be seen or exist on my PC. If you feel it can be trusted (and if you
can't trust your AV update site, who can ya trust?), try allowing ActiveX
and Scripting just for the Update process. See if that has any positive
effect on what you're trying to do. You know how to access those controls.
Control panel>IE options>security tab> scroll down and enable them. I've
assumed you don't customarily permit those features to run. I could be
wrong... it *does* happen. <s>
