disabling messenger

How do I disable messenger on start up?

I have tried all the normal ways, through control panel etc. but messenger
doesn't show up in services.
I can't even seem to unistall it - it doesn't appear as a listed program.
I'm using xp pro.

To disable the windows messenger, right click on your
task bar and select "Task Manager". In the Task Manager
you will see at the top several tabs, open the tab named
"Processes". In the big list look the the "Image Name"
colum, and find the name "msmsgs.exe". If you find this
file, just right click on it and select "End process" and
click "Yes".
You had to do it to remove the messenger
from the memory so you would be able to disable it.

Now go to the directory of "C:\Program Files\Messenger"
and change the name of the file "msmsgs.exe" to any other
name that you want, for example "msmsgs_old.exe". It would
prevent from loading this messenger.

To disable Windows Messenger, open it up (click Start, then Run, type "msmsgs" and click OK),
click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and uncheck 'Run this Program when Windows starts' or
'Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts' (depending on version) as well as 'Allow this
program to run in the background' or 'Allow Windows Messenger to run in the background'
(depending on version). This won't remove Windows Messenger, so features like Remote
Assistance, Whiteboard and Application Sharing will continue to work, but it will let it stay
out of your way.

Also, do you have Norton Antivirus installed? Recent versions of Norton Antivirus added a
new "instant messaging scanning" feature, which can conflict with Messenger and cause it to
also keep starting. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus
icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'),
click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

I have the same problem. I tried your suggestions below but Messenger still
minimizes to the Taskbar. I right-click and try to Exit - I get a message
that it can't exit because other applications like Outlook, Outlook Expressd
or Internet Explorer are using features of it. I'm using XP Pro SP1. I also
use OE and IE 6 SP1. Until I started using XP Pro (previously I was using
2000 Pro), OE and IE never required Messenger to run. I don't want Messenger
to run at all, and it obviously isn't necessary for OE/IE. How do I stop it
(short of the other poster's suggestion of renaming the executable)?

Thanks for the replies everyone - great help, looks like I'll get it sorted
now.
At least I can stop those brown nag boxes on the task bar trying to contact
my daughter when I want to use the pc!
