Disabling Idiot Stuff

I'm a professional developer, and have been for over 10 years. I've been
working with Windows since the beginning. Lately, however, it's beginning to
p*ss me off. Why? Because it treats me like an idiot.

I print a document. Windows throws up a ballon saying "Your document was
sent to the printer." And there it sits until I close it. This is news? Of
course it was sent to the printer. I sent it!

The Recycle Bin has an option to not display a confirm delete dialog box.
Good. But when I go to empty the Recycle bin, it prompts me "Are you sure
you want to empty all the items in the Recycle bin?" Good question. Now that
I think of it, YES OF COURSE, THAT'S WHAT I TOLD YOU TO DO!!!

I keep a lot of shortcuts on my desktop. I'm a developer. I have a LOT of
tools, and like to keep them handy. That's what the desktop is FOR. But God
forbid I should not touch one for a month or so. "There are unused items on
your desktop (d-yu-uh!). Click here to run the Desktop Cleanup Wizard." D**N
it. If I didn't want those shortucts (NOT "icons" you idiot, you know darn
well what they are), I would delete them myself!

And so on.

Now, I can understand the reasons for Microsoft putting this kind of junk in
the OS, and making it hard to find. Most people who use computers don't even
know what they are (despite the descriptive name "computers"). MS wants to
cut down on the idiot support calls they receive. I can just imagine, Joe
SixPack calls up and says "I clicked the Print button on my document. But
nothing happened." Fine. Good sense there.

But I'm sure the dev teams at MS hat to be nagged all day long as well, as
they know perfectly well how the computer works, and what they want it to
do. No doubt most of them turn it all off somehow, and I would bet these
settings are stored somewhere in the Registry.

So, my question is, is there a .reg file floating around out there somewhere
that turns all this s**t off? I can't cut down on coffee, and it's really
starting to fry my nerves!

Remember, Windows is aimed at the mass consumer market, where the
dumbing-down of the OS has greatly contributed to its market-share.
Moderately knowledgeable users (and especially IT professionals and
others claiming advanced computer knowledge) are presumed to be capable
of using the Help files or otherwise deducing how to enable/disable
features they don't need or want.

This isn't default Windows behavior. Check the settings that you've
configured for your specific printer software.

The Recycle Bin has an option to not display a confirm delete dialog box.

I think of it, YES OF COURSE, THAT'S WHAT I TOLD YOU TO DO!!!

I don't see any way to turn this confirmation request off, nor do I
find it particularly desirable to do so. Having supported computer
users for several years longer than you've been a "professional
developer," I've lost count of the number of times I've been asked, even
by supposedly technically knowledgeable users like engineers and
software developers, as well as by the more mundane regular users, how
to recover "accidentally" deleted files from an emptied Recycle Bin.
(And, of course, this doesn't count all those years before the advent of
the Recycle Bin.)

Right-click the Desktop > Properties > Desktop tab > Customize > Run
Desktop Cleanup....

Well, as a "professional developer," I'm sure that you already have an
in-depth, intimate knowledge of the Windows registry. I mean, wouldn't
that be one of the primary prerequisites to the proper design and
development of reliable, safe, and secure applications? Therefore, I
have to assume that you're asking this question merely to vent.

That seems to be centered around your printer driver/software - I never see
such a message.

Working with "normal users" all the time (and even the advanced ones
sometimes - after all, they may not sleep) that extra prompt has saved their
butts more than once. heh

You can turn that off you know.. It's right there in the wizard - and in
Help and Support - a search for "turn off desktop cleanup wizard" came up
with hits including (from the web!):

I have not found many features (balloons, etc) that you could not turn off
with a few clicks or a registry edit or a tool (some provided by
Microsoft..) The tweaks to turn things off are numoprous and depends on
what you want. You can make the interface faster and look like Windows
2000...

Control Panel --> System --> Advanced tab --> Performance section,
Settings button. Then choose "adjust for best performance" and you
now have a Windows 2000/98 look which turned off many of the annoying
"prettifications" in one swift action. You can play with the last
three checkboxes to get more of an XP look without many of the
other annoyances. You could also grab and install/mess with one
(or more) of the Microsoft Powertoys - TweakUI in particular:

Now, I can understand the reasons for Microsoft putting this kind of junk

the OS, and making it hard to find. Most people who use computers don't
even
know what they are (despite the descriptive name "computers"). MS wants to
cut down on the idiot support calls they receive. I can just imagine, Joe
SixPack calls up and says "I clicked the Print button on my document. But
nothing happened." Fine. Good sense there.

But I'm sure the dev teams at MS hat to be nagged all day long as well, as
they know perfectly well how the computer works, and what they want it to
do. No doubt most of them turn it all off somehow, and I would bet these
settings are stored somewhere in the Registry.

So, my question is, is there a .reg file floating around out there
somewhere
that turns all this s**t off? I can't cut down on coffee, and it's really
starting to fry my nerves!

which you can use, make your changes, and then uninstall if you wanted. It

Don't know what I did, if anything, in all those past installs of
Windows but none of them popup a balloon saying that we just sent
something to the printer. Sounds like a printer driver/software
configuration issue.

When I read Torgeir's reply, I looked and the notification for local
printers was already disabled, and I've never touched that option so it
is the default. Must be you are asking about notifications for network
printers but you neglected to mention that.

And, of course, without the prompt-on-delete safety net, there would be
oh so few users that would not complain about not being prompted. Just
go read the newsgroups for e-mail clients. Every day, several times a
day, there is some boob posting there about "accidentally" deleting
their e-mails and now wanting them back. No prompts mean more boobs
complain about losing data. Yet even if there were 100 prompts, there
would be some boob whining about answering Yes to all of them, deleting
their data, and now wanting it back.

If you don't want to use the Recycle Bin, why do you have it configured
to save your deleted items there? Just turn it off. In fact, if you
decide to move thousands and thousands of files from one drive to
another, you'll probably want to disable the Recycle Bin (since the move
across drives will delete the originals which end up filling the
reserved size for the Recycle Bin and which then moves the older files
out one by one as the newer files get deleted).

Rather than complain about the one lone prompt when performing a major
aggregate action (purging ALL deleted files), maybe you should be
reconsidering why you are using the Recycle Bin at all.

This sounds like a very familiar flame that I read before. Didn't this
guy or someone like him post something just like this several months
ago, whining about not knowing how to disable this auto-cleanup feature
yet claiming to be an oh so savvy programmer but apparently without the
expertise or initiative to search before asking, like using the included
help (Start -> Help and Support -> "desktop cleanup")? Sorry, Kevin,
for being so harsh but this one seems such an easily solvable problem
that I have to wonder why you could not resolve it yourself.

Some operating systems are geared for use by sysadmins and tech types
(and they use shells or applications for an end-user user interface).
Some operating systems are geared for use by end users. Guess which
Windows was designed for? Often it would be nice to install and default
to a minimal configuration for Windows but only techies that are willing
to take the time and have the initiative to interrogate available
options and investigate possible solutions would like this approach.
Consumers would hate it. When providing a customizable GUI, you have to
start with some initial state, and yours wouldn't be what the market
wants. Consumers aren't interested in defining all those uninitalized
variables before they actually get to use their hardware and OS. It is
a general-purpose operating system but it does have to be delivered in
SOME state, and that is usually defined by the market in which the
product is sold. In this case, the market (for Windows) is not majorly
composed of techs and geeks.

"Content Management Server". Uffda, something that I'm not familiar
with at all. Being an MVP doesn't mean you are expert in the operating
system, tweaking it, the various hardware on which it runs, or all
applications available for it. His MVP standing doesn't dictate he
knows all. Sounds like Kevin is an MVP in one topic but is just another
end user regarding the operating system. Even experts in SQL, SMS, C++,
..NET, Outlook, or whatever will occasionally have to ask the boob
questions regarding how to use or configure the operating system. For
example, many folks often note looking at the hosts file if they find
they are getting redirected to a malware site, and I've done that, too.
Just today I heard of the registry setting that dictates where Windows
will actually go look for the hosts file, so looking in
%windir%\system32\drivers\etc might have you looking at the wrong hosts
file. With something as monstrous and fluffed up as Windows, I doubt
there is anyone that can claim full knowledge of it.

Tons of them for turning off balloons and such things.

I have TweakUI FreshUI, X-Setup Pro, and a bunch of other utilities, and
knew about Kelly's site and JSI, but was unfamiliar with this website. It
is excellent, but, for someone who has dialup like me, it is tedious to have
to click on a separate link to see each individual tweak. Do you know if all
their tweaks can be downloaded in a single file to peruse offline?

You also would be the right person to ask: I would like to change the list
of places listed on the RClick "SendTo" menu, but forget how to do it. Where

I'm not sure if that's why, but it seems to be the default here, no
third party software installed.

I don't see any way to turn this confirmation request off, nor do I
find it particularly desirable to do so. Having supported computer
users for several years longer than you've been a "professional
developer," I've lost count of the number of times I've been asked, even
by supposedly technically knowledgeable users like engineers and
software developers, as well as by the more mundane regular users, how
to recover "accidentally" deleted files from an emptied Recycle Bin.
(And, of course, this doesn't count all those years before the advent of
the Recycle Bin.)

Why are two additional confirmations required?

Well, as a "professional developer," I'm sure that you already have an
in-depth, intimate knowledge of the Windows registry. I mean, wouldn't
that be one of the primary prerequisites to the proper design and
development of reliable, safe, and secure applications? Therefore, I
have to assume that you're asking this question merely to vent.

If a developer is looking to create a reliable, safe and secure
application, they likely wouldn't be using the registry for anything
other then a "This is where my data files are stored" note.

Moreover, depending on what the developer is developing, they may not
know much of anything about the registry or about Windows in general
outside of their direct experience. If you're a DB admin for Oracle
products, you don't need to know much about the registry.

If you're strictly a web developer, the same would apply.

either, but experience proves that there are lots of people who still
"accidentally" delete files, despite all of the warnings.

Which is a major short-coming, in all too many cases. Poorly written
applications (the ones that try to write to the registry and/or
protected system files) are the bane of client support administrators.

Which helps expliain why Oracle applications are such a nightmare to
maintain on Windows computers. ;-}

If you're strictly a web developer, the same would apply.

True, but that's about the only kind of developer who can safely remain
ignorant of Windows intricacies and not cause many problems. (Unless
one's using ActiveX, that is.)
