disabling hyperlinks

Is there a default setting to turn off the hyperlink function altogether?

I'm finding it very tedious trying to alter link code within a Word document
-- having to right-click and disable the auto-hypertext function every single
time I attempt to edit a link is a time-waster, plus when I forget to do so,
my computer actually takes me to the link rather than letting me alter code
(wasting even more time).
