Word count on the status bar? Must be a Mac thing. We don't have that in
Windows unless we display the Word Count toolbar (and it doesn't update
dynamically, only when explicitly clicked on).

I think we've had this conversation before someone had posted with a
similar question, but didn't say they were on a Mac. The previous person
never posted back to settle it one way or another. I can't imagine any other
way Word Count could be slowing the opening of a document, since it has to
be triggered, doesn't happen automatically.
What does the Word Count toolbar consist of? Mac just has a command (under
Tools or to be added to a toolbar), that produces a detailed dialog.
What makes you think Word Count is what's slowing Word down? Can you
describe your problem in more detail?
Normally you need to trigger Word Count, so how is it running when you open
documents?
