disable the back button

Can someone tell me how sites make it so you can't use the back button to
return to where you were? Like the search engine?
The back button works fine till you try to back out.

Three ways -

1. Pop open a new window. The back button is disabled.
2. Flush the history. Rude behavior.
3. Link to a page that does a server-side redirect. The history will now
contain an endless loop.

There is a reason why Google and Overture will not accept advertising to
pages where the back button breaks.
