Disable search companion

Matthew

In IE, when I type Ctrl. F when a page is loading, a bar comes up on the
left with the title "Search Companion".

How can I disable this? Whenever I type Ctrl. F, I am wanting to search the
page that is loading; not the web.

Thanks in advance,

Matthew

Hi,

The following article:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pr...managed/23_xpsch.mspx#XSLTsection126121120120

Includes the following information which should help you:

To change to Classic Search for the Internet

1. Click Start, and then click Search.
2. Click Change preferences.
3. Click Change Internet search behaviour.
4. Click With classic Internet search.

To disable Search Companion through the registry key

1. Start the Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Locate the following key in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CabinetStat
e
3. Set the value of Use Search Asst to "No."

Regards,

Altrus

I am sorry, I wasn't clear. Or, rather, that article wasn't clear :)

Apparently there are two "search companions". One is the dog that appears
when you go to Start, Search.
I already have this guy turned off. This is what the registry edit from
that article changes. I also tried their solution starting with
"1. Click Start, and then click Search."
This did the same thing.

The other search companion is the one I am currently annoyed with, and I
don't think it is related to the "dog". It appears when (in Internet
Explorer) a page is loading and I type Ctrl. F.

If I type Ctrl. F when the page is loaded, it brings up the "find" box.
This is good, and is different from the "search companion".

IE 6.

Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

If this clears your problem then find out who the culprit(s) is/are with
these tools.

Let AD-Aware Scan your system for advertising Spyware

and:

SpyBot-S&D

p.s Reset the 3rd party browser setting.

p.s. it's not Yahoo companion is it?

I tried disabling 3rd party browser extensions and rebooted, but the search
companion is still there.

I think it is "by design" (don't you hate that?) because when I use it to
search the web, it goes to search.msn.com (by M$).

Any other ideas?

Matthew
