I'm computer stupid. I need to disable System Restore on
XP to clean up a virus. Can anyone walk me through it?
Also, how can I get those pop up ads that come through
saying I'm "leaking" on the internet to stop? Thanks,

Control Panel|SYSTEM|SYSTEM RESTORE tab.

If these are "Messenger" pop-ups, they can be banished by enabling the XP
built-in firewall (which should be done anyway). See HELP & SUPPORT for
easy instructions.

If this is a program that has been inadvertently installed on your PC,
running ADAware may enable its removal. http://www.lavasoftusa.com
Read the instructions, download, install and run the program. The basic
utility is free.

If the pop-ups are site-related - the page that is being visited - then a
pop-up blocker may help. http://google.com Search for "ad blocker".
Or install and use a new-generation browser that has pop-up blocking,
such as NetScape "streamline Navigator only" from http://sillydog.org/narchive

It will selectively block pop-ups and images, and is much more customizable
than I.E. For more...

Or visit http://mozilla.org for links to browsers using similar technology.

You are far from computer stupid. You found your way here
for advice and that's pretty smart. For system restore
click start\control panel\ and double click the system
icon and then you will see a tab for system restore. Click
that tab and then put a check mark in turn off system
restore. For some of the Pop-up ads I know Microsoft will
be adding a popup blocker to Internet Explorer in the near
future. For now you can download a program called Spyware
Blaster. It's free and does a good job. You can also get a
free program called SpyBot Search and Destroy that will
remove any spyware\adware that you have on your system
now. If you need more help just e:mail me. I only come
here on the odd occassion so I might miss anything new you
post. Good luck and Keep smiling.

Hi,

Control Panel/System/System Restore tab, click on "Turn offf system restore
on all drives". Reboot and reverse the steps to reenable it after you finish
cleaning the virus off.
Also, how can I get those pop up ads that come through
saying I'm "leaking" on the internet to stop? Thanks,

Right-click your connection and select properties, go to the advanced tab
and enable the firewall.
