Disable Print

M. Sam

Please I need some help on how to disable print in HTML page to prevent the
surfer from printing out the text or the images. Thanks in advance

Not possible. If you don't want it your text printed, make it a PDF with the full version of Adobe
Acrobat, where you can disable printing, etc.

Add this to after the <head> section of the webpage you want to
prevent others from printing. This should prevent any printing

<style type="text/css" media="print">
BODY {display:none}

<style>{ }

Marcello,

Interesting :-?
Every post I read from the experts say you can't prevent printing or
downloading from the web.

So I thought this looked good. I did a test on one of my pages, and sure
enough, trying to print shows only the background image, not the page
itself.

So far, so good, but I did a View Source and all the source code was loaded
into my preferred editor (UltraEdit) and I can print it from there. Or if I
want to see the page without the HTML it's just a matter of saving it and
opening it again in IE or FP.

So maybe the experts are correct

It is very easy to turn off CSS in any browser, or to replace a style
sheet with your own.

Man, you guys are rough. Seems like a legitimate question. I run a website
for a local photography studio and I POST sports pictures they take of our
local teams. Problem is people come to the website and either print them or
right click and save as... instead of ordering them. So a disable print
option sounds good to me.

Yes, it is a legitimate question, however once the image is load in the user browser, then have
complete access to it to do as they please, so those that truly want your images know how to
workaround any methods current used to stop them.

As a beginner in this area, I thought it was tough too.

But with an image editor you can always overlay the pictures with a huge
message which allows the picture to be seen through it, but is distracting
enough to discourage the visitor from printing it.

Here is an example by my wife with a copyright on it:

The text isn't all that large but make it larger and perhaps in a lighter
colour so that rest of the picture can be seen and I think it should work
well enough.

Uncle Chutney sez "If the truth hurts, wear it."

Sometimes the unvarnished truth can seem rough. However, the roughest truth
is smoother than the slickest lie. And the truth is, if you publish
something on the web, it can be copied and printed.

Think about the word "publish." To make public. I don't see why people don't
seeem to have any difficulty understanding that anything on paper can be
copied, but by golly, if it's on a computer, there must be some sort of
security measure you can undertake. But therein lies the crux of the
problem. It's ON the computer. Just like a book is ON paper. Once it's ON
there, it can be copied. Computers are actually incredibly good at copying,
better than paper copiers. Paper copiers bounce light off of paper and the
light reflects onto a photo-sensitive material. Computers take the actual
numbers that are the data, and copy them number by number. The copy is
exactly like the original.

Every time I see a commercial for some ISP that claims to make you "safe," I
just have to laugh. They don't MAKE you safe. They make you THINK you're
safe. And I'd rather BE safe than THINK I'm safe. Of course, being safe is a
dream, but I'd rather know that it's a dream than believe in a false hope.

A browser downloads content from a web server. What is that content? 1s and
0s. Once they're on your computer, they're ON your computer. And just
because you can't get at them one way, doesn't mean you can't get at them
another. A browser is not a radio receiver. It's an application. It displays
data. Images, text, and whatever else you can put into a computer are
nothing but data, 1s and 0s. And a browser is far from the only application
made that can read them. After all, there are dozens of browser applications
out there. Who do you think writes them? How do you think they write them?
They know data, and they know how computers work. Knowledge is power.
Ignorance is slavery. Take your pick.

Yes, it is... but it would be fairly easy to crop the bottom and still
have a nice shot. Probably not an effective way of protecting a photo...

David,

What I was thinking of was something like this
http://tandcl.homemail.com.au/images/04-05-25-077-new-place-garden-stratford-cr.jpg

I don't think someone would want to print this, although it may be even
better if the font were an outline font,
e.g.

Cute, Trevor.

However, it should be noted that, given a skilled user of Adobe Photoshop,
even your attempt at "desecrating" your own photograph could be overcome, as
an image is simply a collection of pixels or dots of solid color.

Perhaps my point would be best illustrated by examining our copyright laws.
The purpose of copyright laws is NOT to prevent the copying of intellectual
property, any more than our laws against robbery and murder, etc. are for
the purpose of preventing people from committing those crimes. It is simply
not possible to prevent people from committing crimes. Thge purpose of these
laws is to provide a means of redressing the grievances of those who have
been offended, via a system of punishments/consequences. Ultimately, we hope
that by enacting such laws we discourage such practices, but as we all know,
that discouragement is limited.

In short, it is not important or possible to prevent the copying and
redistribution of intellectual property. It is important to provide a means
of recompense when such violations occur.
