disable plug and play

I recently bought a new computer with a motherboard that
has all of the components (video, sound and network card)
integrated into the board. I'm trying to install an
external 56k modem but the network card keeps overriding
and blocking the port (error 633) I've tried most all the
solutions to resolve the 633 from the knowlege base,
nothing works.

I've rigged the system by deleting the ethercards driver
and installing the modem over it. I CAN connect to the
internet, BUT when I reboot the network card overrides
the modem again.

I've tried to disable the LAN connection in the system
dialog AND disable the card itself, rebooted, but I still
have the error.

How do I disable the plug and play, or the windows auto
hardware install so the ethercard WILLNOT override the
modems com port?

Thanks All!!

am desparate to switch off the new hardware wizard. Your suggestion to switch off plug and play seems good, but
1. Theoption to turn if off doesn't seem apparent, despit
2. Doing this will 'result in system instability

I have an unusual external USB device that keeps getting over-ridden by the new hardware thing. Its installed fine at the moment, but i am worried as soon as I reboot the computer - I'll loose it. Its the only thing installed no the partition aside from the OS, and I don't want anything els

Hope you can help. Thanks
