Disable Internet Connection

I have a broadband connection, and I don't like to leave it connected when I'm not using it. So, I have gotten in the habit of disabling my Network connection when I leave my computer. Recently, when I try to do this, I receive an error message: "It is not possible to disable the connection at this time. This connection may be using one or more protocols that do not support Plug-and-Play, or it may have been initiated by another user or the system account." I've tried disabling all the items the connection uses (Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)), and true this does disable the interet access, but I am still curious as to why I can't disable the connect altogether. Anyone have any bright ideas?

August;
I have an external USB Cable modem. It doesn't have a power switch. When I want to disconnect,
I unplug the power (low voltage) cord from the back of the modem. And plug it back in to reconnect.

Well Wes, my cable modem is located down in the basement (and I'm upstairs). It's running into a router, which feeds the connection to my computer and to two other computers as well. So, it would not be too efficient to unplug my cable modem all the time. Thanks anyway!

In TCP/IP properties assign it a static IP address. Leave the default
gateway
blank, and the dns server blank. If you have a quality router this will
keep you
on your LAN but not get you on the internet.
