Disable history

Is there a way to disable the history, or record, of what is typed in a
browser window? When I start to type a name in google or yahoo or whatever,
a list of all the names typed previously comes up. What is the purpose of
this, and can it be disabled, or turned off?

Would disabling this cause you to lose the auto complete feature for forms
etc.? I find this feature helpful.
I was looking more for something to disable the search history in the
browser bar. ie. searching on the word "truck" for instance, and all the
words ever searched starting with "T" come up. I find this annoying, and not
helpful.
