Disable DNS and use Hosts file only

Is there a way to disable DNS on a W2K Pro pc on a Active
Directory network with a DNS server? I want to be able to
use only the HOSTS file for name resolution. I did
everything I know and I still can ping host names that are
not in my HOSTS file. I am trying to determine if my DNS
Server being on a different segement than a group of users
that are accessing W2K SQL servers (on the same segment as
the users)is causing a slow a down the application they
are using.
By using HOSTS file only for name resolution I feel I can
prove this is a problem or not.

Thanks, Ken

Remove any DNS server IPs in the IP properties. Also do an ipconfig
/flushdns to clear any local cache.

Thanks for the response.
I had done all that you have mentioned and and I still can
ping host by name that are not in my hosts file. Even
without any host names in my hosts file I can log on to my
AD domain. When I do this and run the ipconfig /displaydns
I only see an entry for 1.0.0.127 in-addr-arpa. When I put
the host name of my dns server in the hosts file than do
the ipconfig /displaydns I see my dns server. If I then
ping a host by name not in the hosts file it displays when
I do the ipconfig /displaydns. Without any host name is my
hosts file I can still ping the same host by name but the
ipconfig /displaydns only shows the 1.0.0.127 in-addr-arpa.

Thanks Ken

You can not ping by FQDN however - correct? You are pinging the IP returned
by NBT. Maybe WINS is involved to. You don't want to turn that off either
as you still want to browse and login to the domain I would imagine.
