Does anybody know how to turn off IE's discussion toolbar without using
Internet Explorer? (using the registry editor or editing a file, perhaps).
The bar is on and Internet Explorer is asking me to select a discussion
server but that selection box is modal and hidden behind Internet Explorer,
so I am unable to give it focus.

Hi,
Try this... Right-click an empty area of the IE toolbar and uncheck "Lock
the toolbar" if it's checked. Then right-click again and choose customize.
Can you remove the discussion button from there?

Or in IE> View> Explorer Bar, can you uncheck it?

Unforunately all menus and links are inactive; there's a modal box BEHIND the
browser window asking me to select a discussion server, but ALT-TAB doesn't
take me to the model dialog. Thus the need to turn off the toolbar in some
other way, hopefully via the registry or a configuration file (probably the
former). I've looked in the registry for "discussions" but haven't found
entries that look like what I need.

do a search for inetserv.exe on your system. If you find it, you possibly
have a trojan and need to get it resolved.

Hi,
I just read your earlier message. Does starting up in safe mode help?
Anything suspicious that you could disable in MSCONFIG> Startup?

Often modal dialogs can be controlled or ignored
by moving windows. (Drag on title bars or use Alt-Space,M)
