Peter

We find that we are quite slow to view the network files.

Our network administrator suggests us to
1) Stop the "Computer Browser" service
2) Change the following key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browse
r\Parameters IsDomainMaster=FALSE

I would like to know
1) How do I know which one is the Master Browswer in my
network?
2) What is the consequence of disabling those service as
mentioned above ?
3) Why I will browse the network folders faster ?
4) What the Computer Browser for and why it is started
automatically as default ?

Thanks

Are you in a domain or a workgroup?

If you have a domain, browmon from the resource kit.

Computers on which you disable this service won't be able to act as computer
browsers/browse masters for your workgroup/domain. If you have a workgroup
and do this on all workstations, you won't be able to browse the network at
all, I believe.
3) Why I will browse the network folders faster ?

I can't say that you will be able to do that with so little info provided.
4) What the Computer Browser for and why it is started
automatically as default ?

Allows computers to participate in browser elections in a workgroup (hold a
list of names/IP addresses). In a domain, the domain controller should be
the master browser.

What are the exact symptoms of your problem, are you on a workgroup or a
domain, and are you seeing browser errors in your event logs? What was the
reason your admin suggested this?

Dear Lanwench,

Thank you for your advice.

1) Novell is our NOS and there are a number of Windows
2003 Servers here. Worksations are XP or 2000
Professional. All workstations and Servers are joined to
a Workgroup.
2) We find that it takes a quite long period of time to
browse our network drives
3) Is it possible to assign the Master Browser to one /
all of the MS Windows Servers and disable Computer Browser
Service in all workstations ?

Thanks

You want to use WINS, sounds like to me. That ought to help.

Dear Lanwench,

Should we set up WINS Server on one of our standalone
Windows 2003 Server ?

Thanks

Yes - and the Windows servers should all point at it too, as well as
clients. It should reduce the "chatty cathy" factor on the network.
Do you use DHCP? If so, make sure to specify 0x8 for hybrid node in all
clients in the WINS properties.
