Apologies for stating the obvious, but it may not have anything to do with
the DirectX upgrade. I had exactly the same problem as you describe and it
turned out that the volume control on the speakers was turned right down.
(after a lot of head scratching!).
Try typing 'sound troubleshooter' into the windows help search window.
