if a game requires directx 8 can i play it on direct x9
or do i have to download x8 im running win xp

DirectX 9 is backward compatible, so use 9.0a.

It is best to either upgrade DirectX 9.0a to .0b or just install the new
version 9.0b. The latter is available on Windows Update or here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx There is a security
problem which either the update or the new .0b version fixes.
