Directory contents app with output to clipboard and not just a file?

I found reference to one this morning through the nonags site:
LS - File List Generator
(http://home.a03.itscom.net/tsuzu/programing/en/). Very nice size of
50k and no install so gave it a try. But I'm finding it way too
limiting. For the time it takes me to use it, since I can't modify
the settings permanently even through editing the ini file, I can just
as easily have pulled up a dos box and typed in "dir /b > DirList.txt"
and get better results. At least the DOS box opens up right in the
folder I want to catalogue and then directs input to that very same
folder unlike File List Generator. So another one to trash.

I've been looking and looking since after I finished with the html
wysiwyg issue as I'm determined to lick all the problems I've not
found solutions for throughout the years. A quick, efficient and easy
way to list directory contents is something that I definitely need to
find. I tried writing a batch file but my knowledge isn't enough and
this is not worth the time it would take. A simple, customizable
32bit app that accepts permanent default changes is all that's needed.
LS comes close so see no reason there isn't something out there that
will fit the bill.

Anyone run across something that will do the job?

Thanks, guys.

IMO it's options are excellent. I was thinking it should be a
Priceless nomination but IIRC it adds it's web page, or something
similar, to the output. Slightly annoying IMO but otherwise a good
program.

Have you tried PathCopy?

PathCopy?? To get a list of directory contents? Wow! How does it do
that? I've been using PathCopy for a couple of years or more now,
it's one of the first things that gets installed after a system wipe.

Pls advise and thanks!

We're talking about the same app, John, thanks! It doesn't do a good
job. By the time I change the settings, I can just as easily have
typed code into a dos box and gotten a better list in teh very same
folder I am in. This app, though tiny and though it appears ideal
initially, is more hassle than it's worth.

As I mentioned in my initial post, there was no way to change the
defaults that I could see so you're stuck with inflexible settings.
No good.

As I also stated in that post, if you are in a folder and open a DOS
box and then type in command.com and then:

dir /b > dircontext.txt

one gets better results that that app.

Here's why:

- if you're _in_ the folder you want to catalogue the contents of, you
have to go _out_ of the folder to use LS itself (major pain)
- it defaults to one drive although you _can_ set the output to any
drive you want via editing the ini file. But I believe it didn't keep
those settings permanently as I remember having to go back in to
re-type folder in again at some point. No good.
- if you do use the drag-'n-drop feature, you can't just drop it into
the app in general, you must specifically drop it into the tiny box
area <arggghhh!!>
- had to _always_ de-select and select several options on the
interface to get the right data in the output

All-in-all, it failed quite miserably esp. since doing the DOS way
turned out to be quicker, a very sad state of affairs when that's the
case!

I don't like relying on DOS, though, because today I remembered the
code I used yesterday but next time I go to do this, 100 to 1, I
won't.

This issue is one of the last big items on my wish list that I've
never found a good solution for, so very interested if anyone knows of
a competent, small app to list directory contents easily and that has
some flexibility and intelligence, unlike, sorry to say, LS.

Thanks, John! Much appreciated.

Have you tried RJH Extensions:

RJH EXTENSIONS

This is a very nice Windows utility program that will add a number
of useful functions to the context menu of Windows Explorer. The
utility consists of the extensions and an organizer that allows you
to control the placement of the extensions.

Path to clipboard: Copies the path of the selected folder or file to
the clipboard.

Shred File(s): Overwrites and then deletes the selected file or
files.

Rename Files: The Rename Files extension allows you to quickly and
easily rename multiple files in multiple folders.

Encrypt File: The Encrypt/Decrypt extension allows you to easily
encrypt and then decrypt any file.

Duplicate File(s): Creates a copy of the selected file or files in
the same directory.

Copy directory list to file: Creates a file named "dir.txt" in the
selected directory which contains a list of all files, their dates
and sizes, in the selected directory.

Print directory list: Sends a list of all files, their dates and
sizes, in the selected directory to the default printer.

Neat. It'll take me a bit to remember this option, but it does work
and very well!

I had difficulty finding the message and was confused when I saw this
post until I saw "Message-ID:". I ended up just going to
alt.comp.freeware in google groups and searched for "File names to
Word/Excel". And again, to save anyone else the trouble of finding
the actual message, go here out of the entire thread of 8 posts:
http://groups.google.ca/[email protected]
(be careful of the word wrap).

Because the thread is dealing with something completely different from
this one here, the actual pertinent part out of the message is this:

"A not-so-obvious feature that I have found to be GREAT is... If you
select a number of files (even a whole directory) and then activate
one of the PathCopy options (say, 'Copy Long Name' or 'Copy Long
Path') then the whole set of files is processed, and you end up with a
nice list of files on your clipboard, ready to be pasted into whatever
application you want. For example, here is the result of doing just
that on my install directory for this program...

C:\Apps\PathCopy\PATHCO64.DLL
C:\Apps\PathCopy\PATHCO32.DLL
C:\Apps\PathCopy\PATHCOPY.GID
C:\Apps\PathCopy\PATHCOPY.HLP
C:\Apps\PathCopy\PATHCOPY.INF
C:\Apps\PathCopy\README.TXT"

So here's what to do:
- activate the COPY LONG NAME in PathCopy, if you don't already have
it. Or you can choose whichever other PathCopy configuration to
display the data as you need it.
- select the contents of the folder that you need to list. Very easy
via just ^A.
- choose PathCopy's COPY LONG NAME, or whichever other PathCopy option
you want.
- go to target app where you need to paste the directory contents info
to, and press ^v.

It does, indeed, list folder contents very easily. What's nice is if
you use PathCopy anyway, as I do, there is no extra app to deal with.
This one now does double duty.

Thanks.

Thanks Frank! I'd forgotten about that one. I don't think it ever
really registered with me that it did the directory list. However,
just to point out that PathCopy saves to the clipboard directly.
Something to consider. In my case, I'm always using the directory
list for something else so I found that the PathCopy solution was
perfect for me.

But thanks for reminding me re this one. I used it for a long time
once upon a while ago. :blush:D
