Direct X 6.0 & Windows XP

rtdos

When I try to run a game (I've run this game before with no problems) I get
a DirectX 6.0 error: "This program requires at least 3 megabyte of virual
memory to run."

I do have DirectX 9.0b installed so I do not understand why all of the
sudden I am getting this error.

No, I've not installed anything recently that uses DirectX.

The message isn't saying anything about your DirectX.
It's saying that you require 3MB of virtual memory.

Have you installed the game to a partition other than C: ?
Some partition tools do not turn on virtual memory on created
partitions, and some people even turn it off on all partitions if they
have a lot of memory (some tweak tools do this without telling you).
Very few games made today require virtual memory, but some older ones
do.
Check your drive settings. Also, use compatibily mode.

but it does say "DirectX 6.0 error blah blah blah" and it started
happening recently. i've had DirectX 9.0b installed for a while so i
don't think it is directly related to the install of 9.0b could it? i
have an nvidia gforce t200 video card (its on my home computer and i
am at work right now). i did try setting compatability mode and am
getting the same issue either way. in fact, one other program says it
can't allocate enough memory to run and then crashes. could it be
another non-directx issue such as a disabled service or display
properties setting?

Read MY statement, and YOURS again.

You said..."DirectX 6.0 error: "THIS PROGRAM REQUIRES AT LEAST 3 MB OF
VIRTUAL MEMORY TO RUN".

It would be the same message with DirectX 8, 8.1, 9.0,
9.0b................. It is saying DirectX needs 3MB virtual memory.
Check to see if virtual memory is enabled on the drive the game is
installed to.

OK. Have you run the game successfully under Windows XP before?
If so, have you checked the game manufactures site for upsdate patches
to the game? And have you downloaded the latest driver for your video
card? (drivers shipped withe card are often months, or up to a year
old).
What is the name of the game?

Yes, it ran under XP before. No updates / patches available from mfctrs
website. All MS driver updates installed (including video). The name of
the game is "Games for Girls" (its my daughters). Wonder if I cleared the
swap file on shut down that it might help ?

Hmmmmmmm I have never had a DirectX 6 game screwed up by 9+.

Try uninstalling the game and reinstalling it.

If that does not work, try a restore date prior to DirectX 9.........
but I'm not sure if that will help.... MS does not like to let go of
things it thinks it needs.
