Direct 3D problem - please help

I am trying to run a pc game but an error message comes up and then nothing
except the sound of game, no picture. The error message is as follows: No
hardware-accelrated Direct 3D devices were found. Switching to the reference
rasterizer a software devise that implements the entire Direct 3D feature
set, but runs very slowly. Do I need to download something? Any help would
be great, Thank you.

Check you have Direct3D enabled in the "DirectX features" section

Start > run > dxdiag > Display (tab)

Often, when you upgrade DirectX, you have to then reinstall your video
drivers, even if they were working OK previously, or even get/install
updated video drivers. Then, and sometimes happens, when you install the
latest video drivers, you have to install the latest DirectX again. It's
somtimes like playing ping-pong but in the end, it "usually" works out.
