I upgraded my Dimension 8400 to Vista x64 hoping it would take advantage of
the 64 bit CPU I have... tough experience so far. I have as many 64 bit
drivers as I found on the Dell site and the manufacturers. The system is
stable and that's already something. But performance is very bad. Burning
DVDs takes 3x more time than XP x86. Saving DVDs takes also 3x more time.
Disk IO seems to be pretty sloppy, despite getting a 5.2 on the Windows Vista
Performance Index. I've got a SATA 160GB drive, which shouldn't be too bad on
a brand new and clean image. Also put 2GB of fresh DDR2 RAM, it helps a bit
but the bottleneck seems to be IO. Adobe Photoshop takes forever to load and
operate. Frequently showing "not responding" for several seconds to perform
basic tasks. Have you all seen something similar? Any guidance on what to do
to improve IO? I went to Seagate's site and they said no 64 bit driver is
needed from them. Thanks Nick
