one can download a separate trial version of (now) kodak's digital
roc, sho and gem; how do they compare with the software included with
the nikon 5000 scanner?

Same basic software. Perhaps the scanner version is slightly optimized
for the scanner characteristics. Call Kodak/ASF and ask.
