For managing I use:

Pixort, www.pixort.com, for sorting.
Pixvue, www.pixvue.com, for editing EXIF-info and adding embedded keywords
to pictures.
Picasa, www.picasa.com, for editing and cataloguing.

Both Pixvue and Picasa can be used to search for specific EXIF-data or
keywords.

take too many pictures in impossibly dim circumstances.

For managing I use:

Both Pixvue and Picasa can be used to search for specific
EXIF-data or keywords.

I prefer to use the cmdline jhead. It is quick free and useful for
a multitude of often repeated tasks. For example .. Why not cut out
about 7-10k from your jpegs with *no reduction in quality* almost
instantly! Jhead will do it.

I have used Picassa but recently deleted it when I found the secret
stash of database information had grown to 23Mb on my hard drive.
This was *not* in the program folder.
Of course it writes invisible files to folders, so I had quite a time
removing them .
Again a small dos app to the rescue.
sweep attrib -h picasa.ini etc.

EGG is a freeware gallery generating program

The basic idea of this program is to take some picture files,
and build a gallery suitable for uploading to the web.

The gallery consists of a main page which shows "thumbnails"
(smaller versions) of the original pictures, and a page for each
individual picture. Clicking on a thumbnail in a web browser
brings up the individual page which has links to the next
picture, previous picture and back to the main thumbnail page.
