Having tried a fair number of solutions, I have to say that for scanning
35mm slides and especially negatives, NOTHING seems to beat the Nikon
scanners, even the now ancient LS-2000 series if you can find one that
works.

[People knock the LS-2000's because of their "low resolution", but they
scan a 35mm negative to NINE MEGAPIXELS and a FIFTY MEGABYTE TIFF file
(or about a 5MB JPEG). The problem is finding one that is working and
cleaned. My own experience is that 80% of the ones sold on E-Bay don't
work, and most of the remaining 20% need their optics cleaned.]
