Minolta SCAN DUAL IV or canon 9950f?

Hi

I want to scan quite a lot of 35mm negative rolls - some of them more
than 15 years old - and regarding my somewhat limited budget, and the
scanner models available where i live, i have the following options:

- Canon 9950f. Fare Level 3, scans printed materials, good negative
scanning for a flatbed.

- Minolta Scan IV. Higher DPI, higher dmax, much sharper scans than any
flatbed but *no ICE nor FARE*

I would pick the minolta, however, i've read that the lack of hardware
dust & scratch correction causes negatives that have been less than
perfectly stored to produce almost unusable scans.

Being the case that many of the negative rolls i plan to scan where
thrown into envelopes with little care... should i forget about the
minolta?

regards

I would say, find a friend or co-worker that has a Minolta Scan Dual IV and
take some of your negatives and see how bad it is.

Negatives in an envelope that have not be handled very much will be in
better shape than you may think. What harms negatives is the handling and
being exposed to sunlight and dust.

If the negatives were not in envelopes, you would have a big problem.

Cleaning with a Static brush and PEC-12 and air will give amazing results if
the negatives are not scratched up.

PEC-12

PEC-12 and Static brushes can be found at Photo Supply stores, and Adorama.

B&H will not ship chemicals.

I use Kinetronics StaticWisk Model SW-030 for my static brush.
I own a Minolta Scan Dual IV. For the money it does a great job. It would be
nice it the ScanDual 4 had ICE, buy it is not necessary.
