Digital camera - USB problem

Dear all,

I have the following problem. When I attach my new digital camera (olympus
D-580 Zoom) to my pc (USB), I briefly see the 'found new hardware' box in
the bottom right corner of my task bar, but then my pc immediately crashes
and reboots. Other devices (printer, webcam) cause no problem on the same
USB ports.

In the device manager, I see no device conflicts. I do however see 'usb root
hub' and 'USB VIA host controller' twice, but windows says all is
functioning correctly. Maybe this duplicate has something to do with my
prob?

conf: winXP, 500Mb Ram, 20Gb harddisk free, P4, ...

Elvis:

There is very little reason to hook a Digital Camera to the PC. The best way to get
pictures from a camera is to use a USB based Memory Card Reader. This way you save the
batteries on the camera and the camera is not tied to the computer.

SanDisk makes some of the best Memory Card Readers. I have a SanDisk 6 -in- 1 that reads
Compact Flash for my Canon dSLR and SmartMedia for my parents Olympus D-460Z (plus it reads
4 more types of cards).

Windows XP can see your USB attached camera as another "removable meda"
drive. For that to function, your camera must be set up for that.

In my Canon, I have to go to the setup menu and change the
"Comunication" port to "PTP"
