Difficulty reading fonts on NEC LCD monitor

I've been using an NEC MultiSync LCD 1765 monitor for several years
on a Windows 98 machine. I recently bought a new Windows XP (SP2)
machine, and I now have difficulty reading MS Word documents with Times
New Roman font. Here's what I've tried to fix the problem:

1. Open the Control Panel and choose Display.
2. Click the Appearance tab.
3. Click the Effects button.
4. Try different variations of the "Use the following method to smooth
edges of screen fonts" check box.

If I leave this box unchecked, the text is clear but the larger heading
characters have jagged edges. If I select this check box, both Standard
and ClearType options make the Times New Roman text "thin" and
difficult to read, but the larger headings are clear. Zooming in or out
does not solve the problem. The problem does not occur with other
fonts, but my customer primarily uses Times New Roman. :(

I've downloaded and installed the latest NEC driver and spoke to
NEC's tech support. The tech was unable to solve my problem. Can
anyone suggest a solution (or workaround) to my problem? Thanks in
advance.
