Difficulty in pulling email into Outlook from Outlook Web Access

Guest

I want to be able to send/receive e-mail locally in Outlook.

In trying to setup my e-mail account with my local Outlook, I am unable to
connect to my Outlook Web Access server to check the username or connect to
the server. I have tried both http setup in Outlook and exchange server
setup via the Control Panel>Mail.

When trying to set it up as "http" Outlook -hangs- when connecting and
eventually comes back with the message that it is unable to connect to the
server and is going offline.

When setting it up as an Exchange account, I get an Outlook Error message
that says: "The action could not be completed. The connection to the
Miccrosoft Exchange Server is unavailable. Outlook must be online or
connected to complete this action."

Any suggestions???

Is there a definitive YES or NO with regard to using Outlook locally to
send/receive e-mail via an MS Outlook Web Access account???

Thanks!

You'd really need to ask your IT department. If you're using OWA, that means
you have an Exchange account. However, accessing an Exchange account is much
more complicated than just entering the OWA address as your server name
through Outlook.

If you're on the local network to your Exchange server, you should just be
able to enter the server name and have it resolve. But it sounds to me like
you are outside your local network. In that case, you'd either need to set
up a VPN to access your network (something your IT department might or might
not allow) or use what's called RPC over HTTP to access Exchange (which is
also something your IT department and version of Exchange might or might not
allow).

In short, you'll definitely need to contact your IT department for more
information.

you can use outlook to access the owa account using the http protocol - you
need to use the full owa address and include your mailbox name.

No success from IT. I do have one workaround I am trying, yet I get an
error message when Outlook tries to sync the headers with the server.

Task '<accountname>: Folder:Inbox Synchronizing headers.' reported error
(0x80004005) : 'Outlook's request to the server failed.
The server responded ''. '

Any suggestions???

AOL has instructions for configuring Outlook to access your AOL mailbox.
With Yahoo, unless you're using a European Yahoo server, you cannot access
any free Yahoo account with Outlook. You must have a paid Yahoo account.

This doesn't work. OWA only works on https:, but the article applies only ro
non-secure http: webmail.

OWA can indeed be set up to work without SSL - but it's unwise, and most
admins don't allow that outside the LAN (if at all).

You might want to discuss your remote Exchange requirements with your IT
staff at work to see what they will let you do.

I can connect to my office Exchange server when in the office (LAN) but I
cannot connect outside with Outlook.

I can only use the webmail after entering a web VPN access:
- First portal for VPN : https://xxx.yyy.com --> I enter my
user_VPN/password_VPN
- On the next web page, I have the choice for the webmail and it's a link as
https://xxx.yyy.com/go/webmail.yyy.com~ssl where I can enter my
user_mail/password_mail

So I can't enter the url in RPC as every slash is forbidden

In my Outlook, the Exchange server (EXC.yyy.com) is not reachable by ping
(or tracert) and I can't resolve it even after entering the VPN.

I use Outlook 2007 and the Exchanger server shall be 2003. For my collegue,
he's using Outlook2003 and after entering the same web VPN, he just have to
launch Outlook to retrive mail (without RPC). (I tried is user name and vice
versa so it's not a right issue).
