Since page number format is a section property, you need a new section
for each new page number format. In this case, you need one section
for your unnumbered pages, one for your Roman numerals, and one for
the Arabic numbers in rest of the document.
Once you have three sections, do the following:
Go to the first section, and click Headers and Footers on the View
menu. Word activates the header and footer areas and also displays the
Header/Footer toolbar. By default, the insertion point will be in the
header area.
Click the Format Page Number button and make sure it is set to start
numbering at 1. You don't have to change the format, since no numbers
are supposed to show in this section.
Click the Show Next button to go to the next section header. If you
prefer to have your page numbers in the footer, click the Switch
Between Header and Footer button to move the insertion point to the
footer area.
Click the Same as Previous/Link to Previous button to deselect it;
this will allow you to insert contents in the second section header
(footer) without changing the first section header (footer), which
should be blank.
Now click the Insert Page Number button. Use the Format Page Number
button to set the format to Roman Numerals. Also make sure that
"Continue from previous section" is selected.
For the third section, click the Format Page Number button, change the
number format to Arabic numbers and restart numbering to 1. You don't
have to deactivate the Same as Previous (Link to Previous) button
unless you want your Arabic numbers in a different position than that
of
your Roman numerals in section two.
Finally, click Close on the toolbar to return to the main document
area.
