Why are there so many different formats of streaming video on websites?
Why don't they just all use Windows Media Player, for example?

When you watch videos at sites like CNN or ABCnews, are they just using
Windows Media Player or Realplayer, and are just dressed up
differently?
 
different formats of streaming video depends on what program the
company uses, some use Real, some use WMV, it depends on their personal
preference, bandwidth limitations, and various other factors.

Perhaps not every company on Earth wants to develop ware for MS.
