Motherboard have two memory slots, currently 2 x 256MB DIMM installed. I
want install 1GB Stick.
Does it make sense to leave one 256MB stick, so I can get 1280MB total? Will
nonsymmetric memory sticks work well?

Hi:

My advice it is to stick to your mother board specifications. Any memory
increase will improve your system, until certain limit. Try that both memory
modules had the same latency specification.

Depends entirely on the motherboard. My laptop has two slots and
doesn't care whether the memory in the two is matched. My desktop has
four slots organized in two banks. The two banks in each slot have to
be balanced.

Read the manual for your motherboard or computer.
