different keyboard settings in excel/word

i just installed the xp professional operating system (english version) and
ms office 2003 sbe (also in english) on a laptop using a 'swiss german'
keyboard. there are quite a few keys with 3 functions on them: the 3rd
function is accessed via 'alt' + 'ctrl' + 'key'.

if i run excel, i can type every symbol on every key exactly as i see it
(for examle '@' is 'alt' + 'ctrl' + '2'). however if i try the same in word,
only about half of the triple function keys work properly (for instance: '@'
and '#' don't work at all)

any ideas?

My best guess would be that Word thinks you're using a different language and is
automatically switching the keyboard on you (probably to US English). What
language do you see in Word?

And if you turn off Auto-Keyboard switching in Tools/Options/Edit do things
settle down a bit?

You might want to read up on how Word and Windows function together for language
formatting. There's an article in the "Tips" section of my website.
